IN THIS LESSON

Make professional landing non-negotiable.

Visa routes, salary calibration, language skills, and the professional infrastructure of a new market. The goal: the right role, in the right place, at the right number. We have a life goal - US salary, Med half base - and a method to get there.

“Europe is not just for holidays.”

Landing professionally should be top of mind.

    • Visa status is not a detail. Explore skilled worker visa routes, blue cards, ancestry rights, and intra-company transfers for easy-ish mobility options.

    • Language matters. Most companies operate in English - especially in tech - but language skills still influence hiring decisions and cultural integration.

    • Salary calibration is essential. US expectations typically exceed European pay brackets, but companies add benefits, social protections, and work-life structures.

    Clusters

Europe offers incredible opportunities: tech ecosystems, global HQs, industrial and creative hubs, growth clusters, and international teams. Experience outside of Europe can signify scale and pace. Add your grasp of local context, and you move from “hiring risk” to “international asset.”

    • London: all sector powerhouse, media, finance/fintech, AI, scaleups

    • Munich: industrial tech, mobility, deep engineering, defence

    • Paris: AI, institutions, culture, hospitality, luxury & consumer

    • Amsterdam: HQ hubs, advertising, SaaS, fintech, fashion (true)

    • Oslo/Stockholm/CPH: design-led tech, green tech, fintech, retail

    • Zurich: AI, private banking, engineering, non profit

    • Barcelona/Lisbon/Madrid: marketplaces, SaaS, hospitality & travel

    • Warsaw/Tallinn: high-growth tech startups, defense

    What Works In Practice

    • Focus: select your target markets (not just ‘Europe’)

    • Understand visa pathways early

    • Benchmark realistic compensation

    • Identify sectors where your background is strongest

    • Refactor for European Norms

    • Start learning the language

    • Always lead with network

    Too Much Choice?

International ecosystems include London, Munich, Amsterdam, Zurich, Stockholm, Barcelona, and Paris (sector-dependent). New hubs have emerged for remote work and a better quality of life - Lisbon, Athens, Marseille - with limited local opportunities but fast access to economic powerhouses.

Pick your hub carefully, aligned with your industry and seniority - and your partner’s. Many dual-sector couples often land in cities that intersect their careers: London, Amsterdam, even Brussels or Geneva.

    Common Pitfalls to Avoid

    • Apply broadly without country focus

    • Ignore visa mechanics

    • Submit an unlocalised CV

    • Random AI job application tools

    • Overlook tax planning opportunities

    • Underestimate the soft power of networks
